“Medium used is egg tempera, a medium that predates oil paints. I like to use it because it allows for greater detail and precision.”

Ed McCarthy Allen is a contemporary realism artist and developed his first interest in art at the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago as a young boy. He currently makes his home in Castle Rock, Colorado where he and his wife have resided for the past 14 years. His first attempts at creating art began with a decision to try his hand at sculpture. But over time he turned his focus to painting. After graduating from the University of Chicago and completing his military service, he lived and worked in many different locales throughout the U.S (California, New York, Colorado, the Midwest) and for a number of years in Europe. His formal painting background includes training in watercolor, gouache, and oils. Essentially self-taught, at retirement he honed his skills at the Art Students League of Denver.
