Homage to Picasso’s Guitars
Handmade cast paper, mixed media
Violin
$1,000

“Loving art history, I took this opportunity to pay homage to Picasso’s wonderful Guitar works with my somewhat whimsical treatment of this violin…which happens to be the violin, no longer in working condition, that I played as a child. Picasso, stop turning over!” Working abstractly, three particular media enable me to explore my interests in varied textural surfaces and in combing painting with dimensional forms. I work directly in wax to form sculpture which is cast into bronze; make handmade paper which I cast into highly textured dimensional wall sculpture; and create colorful terra cotta and mixed media wall pieces which can be whimsical in nature or reflective of issues that capture my thoughts at a given time.”

In January 1998 Jan embarked on a new life’s journey: leaving the regimented world of work to return to the visual arts. In 1972 Jan received a BFA from the University of Colorado and spent the next 26 years working actively in the arts community at United Bank of Denver, Western States Arts Foundation, ArtReach and as the first director of the Arts Program at the Denver International Airport. At The Denver Center for the Performing Arts she served as  director of public relations. Jan directed a master’s program in Liberal Studies at University College, University of Denver where she incorporated various exciting arts courses into the curriculum, and also participated on the boards of numerous arts organizations including the Metropolitan Denver Arts Alliance, Denver Film Society, Colorado New Music Association, Asian Performing Arts of Colorado, and the Mizel Museum of Judaica. Since 1998 she has been working to explore her own creative voice. Working in bronze, handmade paper, terra cotta and mixed media, Jan uses abstract forms to provide new avenues of personal expression and communication with others.

"Certainly, all of the experiences I have had…family, education, a varied career, a passion for the arts, involvement in women’s issues, love, life and loss…will ultimately find their way into my art. I am elated to be able to engage in this creative journey." For more information visit www.jansteinhauserstudio.com
